Iyengar yoga

Inversions

The Iyengar yoga method of yoga is named after our teacher Yogacharya Sri B.K.S. Iyengar.

The teaching helps you focus on correct alignment of the body in poses, ensuring you are working safely  with maximum benefit to your strength,  flexibility & wellbeing.

Classes generally start with warming up and simple poses, moving gradually towards more advanced poses, always ending with a period of relaxation & as you progress, sometimes breathing techniques.

Props, such as bricks, blocks & belts are sometimes used to allow those with less flexibility or strength to work correctly, without strain & to the achieve their full potential.

The photo above shows students in different stages of inversions- from beginner to experienced and those who need more support.

The Iyengar method is a challenge to the intelligence as the mind needs to focus on awareness in & out of the postures. Body & mind are stretched beyond their everyday limits & begin to act in unison.

Being totally aware & absorbed in the pose as they are being done is meditation: body & mind communicate at a subtle level & are harmonised. The Iyengar method is not just a sophisticated form of physical exercise & breathing- it is a spiritual practice aimed at integrating the mind, body & inner self.
